Extortion is committed when a person or a group of persons illegally obtain cash, property or services from another person or institution through oppression. To qualify for the crime, a message sent willingly to a person or business entity using threat is enough. It does not necessarily have to reach the intended recipient, the act of sending the message is already considered as crime.
Extortion cases are rampant in countries where the government is inefficient. Mostly, poor countries have the highest rate of extortion cases. Rural areas are where most extortionists operate. This crime needs to be stopped for it negatively affects the progress of a country.
