Extortion as a Criminal Offense
Extortion is committed when a person or a group of persons illegally obtain cash, property or services from another person or institution through oppression. Extortion is often operated by organized crime groups or syndicates. Even without obtaining money, a simple threat of violence can be called extortion.
Organized crime groups usually use extortion to bully businessmen. This is where most syndicates earn their money for a living. Most businessmen submit to this kind of criminal offense for protection from further extortion activities from other organized crime groups. In other cases, extortion may involve physical pain and suffering to exact money from random persons.
Violent threat is not the main reason for an act to be considered as extortion. In some cases, the use of blackmail or threat, like disseminating pictures that can ruin a person’s reputation, filing criminal reports to the police whether the threat is true or not. In short, any form of threat can be considered as extortion.
In this modern era, extortion has evolved using electronic instruments such as telephone, and computer systems. Mails can also be used as an instrument for extortion. To qualify for the crime, a message sent willingly to a person or business entity using threat is enough. It does not necessarily have to reach the intended recipient, the act of sending the message is already considered as crime.
Extortion cases are rampant in countries where the government is inefficient. Mostly, poor countries have the highest rate of extortion cases. Rural areas are where most extortionists operate. This crime needs to be stopped for it negatively affects the progress of a country.
